Island Eating, one year later

I'm so happy that it's summer. Having now returned to school, the main reason summer pleases me is that it means no classes and while there is work to be done during these three warm months, I will be sure to have more time to enjoy cooking, eating, and sharing stories about food once again...at least until the middle of August. Once school starts up again, all bets are off.

I kicked off my summer with a short trip to see my family back in Singapore, including a quick 48 hour trip to Manila. We packed in a lot of good meals in the short time I was in Asia...below are some highlights (a lot of seafood since that's something we don't get to enjoy too much of here in Rochester)

Sashimi lunch set for my first lunch in Singapore (just don't really trust the sashimi in Rochester)

Fried baby squid (sotong)

Long Beach Seafood Restaurant - one of the best places in Singapore for seafood...food did not disappoint, though they are trying to go all fancy with their presentation, which is not necessary

Pepper crab, chili crab dipping sauce, and greasy fried buns (best non-seafood item on the menu)

Prawns with salty fish roe sauce (and an overdone plate presentation)

Two noodle dishes from Crystal Jade (left - Dandan mian; right - zha jiang mian)
[fresh soybean milk in the foreground]

********* 48 hours in Manila ********
(Two goals: see family; eat food)

Just some of what we ate for lunch (garlic rice, sisig, filipino style calamari)

Bibinka (with white cheese and salted egg)

Hands down the best meal of the trip (eaten just before going to the airport to catch our flight home). All this food came from a single stall at the food court of a new shopping center...if only the food courts at malls here could do this

Remnants of my oysters and this type of seaweed I'd never had before but would definitely have again.
